What Matters to Egmont
These aren't talking points from a strategy memo. These are the issues I hear about at the grocery store, at the wharf, and around the kitchen table.
Making Life More Affordable
The rising cost of living has made it harder for Islanders to make ends meet, and people are feeling the pain at the gas pumps, the checkout lines, and when the bills pile up at the end of the month. I support the Conservative plan to cut taxes, promote competition, and scrap unnecessary regulations to lower the cost of living.
Better Access to Healthcare
Too many Islanders are without a family doctor, left waiting for specialists, and dealing with overcrowded or closed emergency rooms. Although healthcare delivery is a provincial responsibility, Ottawa can - and should - play a bigger role by increasing transfer payments, funding important programs and initiatives, and streamlining the process to license immigrant healthcare professionals.
Standing Up for the Fishery
A thriving commercial fishery creates strong communities in western PEI so it is imperative that the federal government acts to support the industry. Ottawa needs to fix our small craft harbours, help deliver lower fuel costs, and increase DFO enforcement of the lobster fishery. We also need a more robust plan to deal with the MSX/Dermo crisis affecting our oyster industry, and help oyster fishers and growers get through this difficult time.
Supporting Our Seniors
Our seniors have built our communities and deserve a government that allows them to retire, invest, and collect the benefits they’ve earned. Conservatives are committed to maintaining the retirement age at 65, increase tax-free earning levels, and extend their RRSPs until age 73. This will keep more money in the pockets of our seniors - because they deserve it.
Supporting Agriculture
The potato industry is to PEI what oil and gas is to Alberta, and we need a government that recognizes that. I will be a tireless advocate for this industry and support the Conservative plan to allow these rural economic drivers to flourish.
Lifting Up the Next Generation
Youth unemployment, unattainable housing, and massive deficits are hurting our young Islanders. The federal government needs to help unleash our small businesses and attract tourism to Egmont to provide job opportunities for youth and students. We also need to get government out the way to bring down the cost of housing, and get spending under control to stop passing on reckless debt to the next generation.
